Leading the Future of Workforce Development: A Message from SETA’s President

Membership
Akil Bektemba, SETA President

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as President of SETA. As I step into this role, I do so with gratitude and recognition for the leaders who built our association, the members who power us, and the emerging leaders who will carry our mission forward. SETA’s success is driven by a shared, fundamental belief: workforce development is the common thread that connects labor, education, business, technology, innovation, and people.

For 50+ years, SETA has served as the trusted voice, convener, and professional home for workforce practitioners across the Southeast and beyond. Our members have remained the essential link that translates major contributions to human opportunity through economic shifts, industrial revolutions, and policy changes. Today, that unifying role is more vital than ever.

The Common Thread of Regional Prosperity

Workforce development does not happen in a vacuum. It is the central engine where critical systems intersect:

  • People, Labor, & Economic Justice: Ensuring that systemic barriers fall so that every individual has fair access to dignified work, sustainable career pathways, and true economic mobility.
  • Artificial Intelligence & Technology: Preparing workers and businesses to harness technology and AI to thrive in an increasingly tech-driven economy without leaving talent behind.
  • Education & Learning: Bridging the gap between classrooms and the rapidly changing skills required in modern workplaces.
  • Business, Innovation, & Growth: Supplying employers with the agile, skilled talent needed to scale, innovate, and keep our regional economy competitive.

Collaboration is our fuel. When we bring together workforce boards, chambers, labor, educators, tech leaders, and community advocates across our eight-state region, we create momentum no single sector can match. SETA doesn't just sit in the room for conversations about the future of work; we help lead them.

Intention and Focus

As we build on our 50-year legacy, five strategic priorities will guide our work:

  1. Grow Membership - We are deepening engagement so that every member experiences tangible value by gaining access to emerging tech trends, cross-industry networks, and actionable insights that elevate their everyday impact.
  2. Expand Regional Impact - SETA will strengthen our position as the Southeast’s hub for workforce strategy, policy dialogue, and practical innovation that delivers measurable, equitable outcomes.
  3. Deepen Ecosystem Connections - We will intentionally align business, education, government, philanthropy, and community partners to build a fully integrated regional ecosystem.
  4. Strengthen Board Leadership & Strategic Partnerships - We will continue to leverage the deep expertise of our Board of Directors while expanding strategic partnerships, driving sponsorships, and bringing forward-thinking voices to the table.
  5. Invest in the Next Generation of Leaders - We are actively creating pathways for emerging talent. Through structured mentorship and leadership development, we are pairing institutional wisdom with fresh, innovative approaches to modern workforce challenges.

The Road Ahead

Our vision is clear: SETA will be the premier workforce hub for the Southeast.

This is a space where leaders connect, technologies are demystified, partnerships are forged, and solutions are centered on human potential and economic mobility. Most importantly, we will remain focused on our core outcome: helping people access opportunity, helping businesses thrive, and helping communities prosper.

The future of SETA won't be shaped by one President or one Board; it will be shaped by one connected system. Our communities are counting on us.

Thank you for your commitment to SETA and this profession.
